Fun Fact

When MSU Denver was founded, the mustang was chosen as its mascot. However, since the students had to run across roads between numerous buildings scattered throughout downtown Denver to get to their classes, they took a vote and decided the “roadrunner” would be a more appropriate and meaningful mascot in 1977.

Great Falls College-MSU now has a mascot

Voting to choose a mascot for Great Falls College-MSU closed on Sunday, February 5, and the winner is: the River Otters.

More than 2,300 votes were cast, and River Otters finished with 48% of the vote, Electric Elk finished with 42%, and Wolverines garnered 10%.

Great Falls College-MSU CEO Stephanie Erdmann said in a news release, “We are so excited to be the River Otters. River Otters are tough, feisty characters who persevere in sometimes harsh conditions to thrive. They also look out and care for one another, so we think they are the perfect representative of our amazing campus community. Plus, they are super cute.”

In October of 2022 the college started the process of creating a mascot, soliciting suggestions from students and the community.

Among the suggestions were pronghorns, otters, wolverines, squirrels, bison, pelicans, and elk. Preliminary voting narrowed the final three choices to Electric Elk, River Otters, and Wolverines.

The purpose of the mascot is to help the college with marketing and branding.

"We want Great Falls College to have something that people easily identify with that really elevates the image of our college,” said Shannon Marr at the time; Marr is the recruitment and enrollment director for the school. "We've been asked by students for a long time about a mascot and it never really had any momentum behind it."

The process resulted in some questions, according to Scott Thompson, the school's director of communications and marketing.

“No, we are not starting an athletics program,” Thompson said. “Choir director Cynthia Stevens and the Great Falls College Community Choir still will be the only team on campus. But the mascot will help us enhance brand identity, build community and school spirit and have some fun. And if Geico can have a gecko, we can have a river otter.”

Erdmann said the brand identity the college is creating is important and she's glad to be helping lead the college into a new era: "It's important to have something to build school spirit, that provides enthusiasm and the ability to rally around something."

And contrary to what some people may have heard - yes, there are indeed river otters in Montana:

The Strange MSU Tradition Of Revealing ‘Sparty’

The Michigan State student who portrays 'Sparty', the school's well known mascot, is kept a secret, until graduation, when their identity is revealed in a strange custom.

The Students Who Donned The 'Sparty' Costume, Wear His Boots For Graduation

This weekend, Michigan State University will hold their graduation ceremonies on campus, and at that time, some of the students will be wearing the giant boots of the Sparty costume. It's a tradition that reveals which students were in the 'Sparty' costume on the sidelines of most MSU sporting events.

This year it was revealed that Maddie Scanlon was the main student who portrayed 'Sparty', only the third time a woman has been in the macho Sparty outfit. Scanlon will wear his boots with her graduation gown, revealing the secret she kept for four years. She graduates from the school's College of Communication Arts and Sciences Friday night, May 6.

The senior revealed her identity on her Facebook page this week.

It's A Time Suck To Be Sparty, But Well Worth It

All of the students on the Sparty team are volunteers. While they are provided with meals and transportation to and from events, it's mostly a labor of love that eats up a lot of their free time.

Alumna Erin Bormes, class of 1998, and Nicole Niemiec, class of 2018, are the only other women to portray Sparty.

Niemiec admitted she stuffed newspaper in her shoes to meet the height requirement of 5'11".

Scanlon also revealed there is an intensive training process.

“They want to make sure that, one, you have enough time to kind of understand and fully be able to embody Sparty, but also, they want to make sure that you get fun experiences and get to go and travel and stuff,” Scanlon told MSU's State News.

So if you see someone wearing giant boots as their foot attire this weekend, know that that is Madison and that she was Sparty. .

Brown's athleticism and versatility have been on full display, as he has been able to score from anywhere on the court and also contribute on the defensive end. His explosive playmaking ability has created excitement among Celtics fans and has shown great potential for the future.

Which Big Ten Mascot Is The Dumbest?

It's almost a law that every college football team has to have a mascot that parades along the sideline craving attention from fans hopped up on tailgate alcohol. So which Big Ten mascot looks the dumbest? First of all, let me give props to the University of Michigan, the University of Illinois and Indiana University for not having a costumed mascot. They win first place just for not being that dumb to begin with.

The Celtics' success in the summer league can also be attributed to their strong team chemistry and coaching. The team's young talent and potential, along with their strong coaching and team chemistry, bodes well for their future success. Reviews for "Celtics' summer league tactics outplay opponents with precision"

- John Smith - 2 stars - I was really looking forward to watching "Celtics charmed summer league divination" but I was sorely disappointed. The plot was confusing and disjointed, making it hard to follow what was going on. The acting was also subpar, with the actors appearing unengaged and unconvincing in their roles. Overall, I found the film to be a letdown and not worth the hype.
- Sarah Johnson - 1 star - "Celtics charmed summer league divination" was a complete waste of time. The storyline was shallow and unoriginal, offering nothing new or intriguing. The dialogue was cringe-worthy and the pacing was sluggish. I couldn't wait for it to end and regretted spending my money on a ticket.
- Michael Brown - 2.5 stars - I had high hopes for "Celtics charmed summer league divination" but it fell short of my expectations. The special effects were lackluster and failed to create an immersive experience. The characters were underdeveloped and lacked depth, making it hard to care about their fates. The film had potential, but it missed the mark in execution.
